This large portion of a pediment has probably been incorrectly restored. Moreover, the building to which it belonged and its original location are unknown. The sculptures show the principal Greek gods, Zeus and Hera, enthroned and receiving the hero Herakles, who wears his signature lionskin. The fragments came to light in 1888, and it is likely that before 1902 Gilliéron made hand-colored photographs of the figure of Zeus. In this half-scale watercolor he meticulously rendered the precise, delicate detail of the relief.
