The figure of Saint Paul is depicted in a viewpoint known as di sotto in su (seen from below), evident in the foreshortening of the face and feet, suggesting that this drawing was a study for a painted work intended to be placed above the viewer. The sheet was formerly considered to be a study for a painting attributed to Francesco Morone, Saint Paul Between Saints Denis and Mary Magdalene, in the Church of Sant’Anastasia in Verona. However, the resemblance is now considered to be indicative of the stylistic similarities between Francesco Morone and Michele da Verona, both of whom were influenced by Francesco’s father, Domenico. The grayish-brown tones, together with the voluminous folds of drapery articulated with highlights, create a sculptural effect.
