In 1845 Chassériau was asked to make a portrait drawing of his friend Louis Marcotte de Quivières, a young aristocrat who collected paintings by Ingres. Chassériau also sketched this portrait of Marcotte de Quivières’s wife, Gabrielle. It is affectionately inscribed as a gift to her husband. The drawing is remarkable for the reserve and modesty with which it portrays a young sitter of such wealth and privilege. As with other drawings by Chassériau, the artist’s debt to Ingres is unmistakable. Chassériau entered Ingres’s studio at the age of eleven.
