Portrait of Madame Rhode (Rhoda?)
Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
1810–20 · Graphite on pale buff wove paper · Robert Lehman Collection

Unlike other presentation portraits by Ingres in this gallery, this one appears unfinished. Even its signature, Ing, is incomplete, and the inscription is only partially legible. The ethereal figure may have been a British subject who posed for Ingres in Rome in the early nineteenth century. Her exotic headdress and Empire clothing and jewelry accord with such a date. The drawing remained in the artist’s studio at his death, further supporting its presumed role as a study.
