Following an early period in Venice, Crivelli moved to Fermo, in the Marches, where he executed the altarpiece of San Francesco Montefiore, to which this panel originally belonged. Portraying an apostle holding a scroll of a creed, the panel was part of the altarpiece’s predella, consisting of a series of arch-topped half-length figures of Christ and eleven saints and apostles. Crivelli's linear, dry, and expressive style reveals the influence of the Paduan school of the mid-fifteenth century.
