Bone was often used in art production instead of the more expensive ivory. This fragment of a panel, possibly from a door, represents an excellent example of early Fatimid carving, probably made during the long reign of the caliph al-Mustansir (r. 1036–94). Late antique traditions, such as the vine decoration, merge with the lively and refined Islamic manner of low-relief design and schematic rendering of forms.
