Plaque of a Man
Unknown
325–641 · Wood · Medieval Art

This wood plaque of a man holding an animal is from Akhmim, an important artistic center in late-antique Egypt. The rendering of the face resembles a mask. Recent research on late-antique and medieval North African art indicate that central African masks appear more than previously realized in artworks.
