Some of the finest ceramics were made in Rayy, Iran, an important center of lusterware production until the Mongol destruction of the city in the thirteenth century. This densely decorated ewer features several bands of figural and vegetal decoration. The vessel's most prominent, central scene shows six seated figures holding cups. A hare, a leopard, and dog race around the neck of the vessel in the band just above the central register.
