Ewer
Unknown
9th century · Earthenware; incised and applied decoration (barbotine) · Islamic Art

The decoration on this ewer was inspired by the pre-Islamic motif of the tree of life flanked by two long-horned quadrupeds and large winged birds. The use of unglazed vessels, such as this ewer, to keep liquids cool had a long-standing tradition in the Near East.
