These Berber ear ornaments were not inserted into the ear but rather attached to a diadem or hair with chains, and positioned so as to hang on each side of the face, near the ear. This style is known as tikhrazin or douwwah and is popular in the Rif mountain region. Coral is a typical material for Berber jewelry and is thought to possess much baraka, or blessing. The triangular floral motif projecting in the center of the ring is known as gharnati ("from Granada")—a reference to decorative elements which were brought by craftsmen who came to Morocco from Spain after the Reconquista in the 15th century.
