In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, mural paintings were commissioned by Safavid rulers and grandees for their palaces. The most beautiful youths in the court were chosen for the office of cupbearer and were a popular subject for artists, who portrayed them in idealized form. They appeared as shown here, in mural paintings, as well as in paintings intended for albums.
