Coins are among the most common ornaments of Amazigh (Berber) jewelry. The coins on this necklace appear to be Moroccan rials minted during the first years of the twentieth century, but similar jewels are known to include French and Spanish currency as well. In addition to adorning the body, Amazigh jewelry served as a kind of portable wealth, which could be sold or traded if needed. This necklace would have been one of many silver pieces worn by an Amazigh woman, which would have created a magnificent sound as the wearer moved.
