A wonderfully expressive face is all that remains of the figure holding in one hand a phiale, a shallow bowl designed for pouring liquid offerings. In the other hand is a wreath or tambourine. Similar figures are frequently encountered in textiles of the early Byzantine period, generally as part of a raucous procession celebrating the god Dionysos.
