Parke of the Artillary (Aubry de La Mottraye's "Travels throughout Europe, Asia and into Part of Africa...," London, 1724, vol. II, pl. 26B) — William Hogarth|Aubry de La Mottraye

Hogarth made this print early in his career to illustrate a travel book by the French author Aubry de La Mottraye. It represents a plan of battle between the Russians and the Turks which Charles XII of Sweden brought about. The medals show the opponents, Peter the Great and Mehemet Baltagy (Baltadji or Baltaci), the Ottoman grand vizier, with two sides of a coin at lower center. The vizier had been appointed while Charles spent an extended period of exile in Turkey.
