The Wake on the Ferry — John Sloan

Asked to provide a plate for a special printing for sale to the Arts Students League members, Charles W. Kraushaar, Jr. advised Sloan against using an existing plate. When the Secretary of the club suggested he make a lithograph from an old oil painting, 'The Wake of the Ferry', Sloan was furious - but also inspired. He decided to create a humorous plate titled 'The Wake on the Ferry', referencing a drunken Irish wake, see: Morse 1969, p. 348-9.
