Matted with the print is a letter from John Sloan to Fred Biesel, dated April 20, 1928. The letter and a copy this print was sent as a thank you to everyone who contributed to the purchase fund to secure Sloan's painting 'The Lafayette' in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection (MMA accession 28.18). The letter reads: Dear Fred Biesel, Desiring to express my thanks to each of the contributors toward the purchase and presentation of my painting "The Lafayette" to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I have made and ask you to accept the enclosed print as a souvenir of the occasion.
