"Frankie and Johnnie" — John Sloan

The scene shown is from Act II, Scene 5 of E.E. Cummings' 'HIM' (New York, 1927). A small chorus sings the folk song 'Frankie and Johnnie' on the tiny stage of the Provincetown Players Theatre in MacDougall Street. Sloan kept a program from the production he saw in his diary. The program lists Hemsley Williams and Goldye Steiner as the two leads, see: Morse 1969, p. 262. For alternate impression see: 1995.411.100
