Picasso showed a classicizing tendency throughout his life, and it was perhaps more consistently manifested in his enormous output of prints, with their emphasis on line, than in his work in other media. Here, many of the images of heads recall antique coins, cameos, or gems, though the central head in the bottom row is probably a modern artist. Picasso often appeared in his own work, in any number of guises, of which the artist is probably the most self-evident.
