As a printmaker, Cassatt developed a distinctive combination of fine, rich lines in drypoint and flat areas of color in aquatint. Following an 1898 exhibition in New York, a critic described these works as "the most delightful color prints of our time." This large-scale plate of a mother holding her child aloft on the grass was among Cassatt’s last in the medium. It was published in an edition of roughly forty-five as part of a new venture called "L’Estampe nouvelle" (The New Print) in October 1897.
