Cassatt based the composition for this print loosely on the central panel of a mural (now destroyed) that she designed for the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. The artist first took up color printmaking in earnest after visiting an exhibition of Japanese ukiyo-e prints at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1890. This work maintains the flat, decorative quality adapted from the Japanese aesthetic despite the indication of a pathway that recedes in space through the doorway at right.
