The Associated Press (AP), a media cooperative aimed at quick news sharing, began its Wirephoto service in 1935. Member photographers and news outlets used in-house or portable transmitters to scan photographs, converting black-and-white tones into electrical pulses that were instantaneously received and printed using the same technology. With speed the utmost concern, newspapers relied heavily on photo editors to select powerful images that would convey the thrust of a story. The gray paint and blue grease pencil markings on this photograph indicate where the image was cropped and modified to express the violence inflicted on Civil Rights demonstrators.
