Flanagan, one of the eminent medalists of the early twentieth century, completed a group of portraits of respected American artists, including representations of Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir (35.16.2), and Paul Wayland Bartlett (1865-1925), the first of this series. This medallion was completed on the occasion of Bartlett's election as president of the National Sculpture Society in 1917. It reveals stylistic indebtedness to the reliefs of Flanagan's mentor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, especially in the treatment of the uppercase lettering punctuated by bullets. "Bartlett" was cast in two variant editions, with diameters of 4.5 inches and 12 inches.
