Glass mosaic inlay fragment
Unknown
late 1st century BCE–early 1st century CE · Glass · Greek and Roman Art

Opaque deep purple and white. Flat, triangular plaque. Marbled mosaic pattern in red ground with tiny red streaks and white rods. Chipped edges and corners; polished upper side; pitting of surface bubbles; thick creamy weathering and some iridescence on underside and some of edges. The colors and patterning are probably a deliberate attempt to imitate a luxury stone such as red porphyry.
