Glass mosaic inlay fragment
Unknown
late 1st century BCE–early 1st century CE · Glass · Greek and Roman Art

Translucent deep purple, appearing black, and opaque white. Flat, irregular hexagon, with one long rounded edge. Marbled mosaic pattern in a black ground with white threads and swirls. Polished upper side; pitting of surface bubbles on upper side; dulling, pitting and patches of weathering on underside and edges. This small piece of marbled mosaic glass is roughly shaped as a lozenge or hexagon, suggesting that it was an inlay in a larger opus sectile panel of geometric design.
