Dish with Japanese court woman and birds
Unknown
early 18th century, decoration ca. 1750 · Hard-paste porcelain (Jingdezhen ware) · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

A Dutch rendition of a scene from a Japanese tale decorates this dish manufactured at the Jingdezhen kilns of southeastern China. The standing figure of a man wearing a stylized Chinese costume may have been borrowed from a Netherlandish print depicting what was believed to be Eastern modes of dress.
