In medieval legend, Godfroy de Bouillon, a leader of the First Crusade and first ruler of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, was ranked as one of the three greatest Christian heroes. With King Arthur and Charlemagne, the biblical King David, Joshua, Judas Maccabeus, and the pagan luminaries Hector, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar, he was celebrated as one of the nine most worthy of all time.
