This bowl, untested, displays iconographic eccentricities such as the horseman’s facial features, foliated beard, curls, and hat that suggest it may belong to the modern group. Modern works tend to bear extravagant figural and mythological depictions unknown on medieval pieces and grounded in the twentieth century. Plain medieval pieces were sometimes recut with new designs with more market appeal, reglazed, and refired.
