Saint John — Unknown

These figures (see also 47.3.1) originally stood at the foot of a Crucifixion, as in the complete ivory ensemble in a nearby case. Despite the Gothicizing face of Saint John, the full classical drapery and the firm sense of the bodies beneath suggest an artist open to Renaissance innovations.
