Camp with Ambulance
John Singer Sargent
1918 · Watercolor and graphite on white wove paper · The American Wing

Sargent recorded a number of scenes of camp life while traveling in France as an official war artist for the British government, researching and gathering information for a major painting he would produce back in London. Here Sargent records a vignette of military life focusing on the army tent and vehicles. Two soldiers sitting on a bench at the right edge of this sheet are rendered in a cursory manner that reveals the artist’s rapid technique.
