A member of the National Academy of Design and an instructor at the Art Students League, the international traveler Peterson infused this depiction of New York City with national pride. She invites the viewer to enter the scene mid-street and to gaze along the grand avenue decorated with vibrant flags and banners. Peterson shared with Childe Hassam an interest in such patriotic displays.
