Painted only three years before Metcalf's death, this autumnal landscape depicts the hilly farmland around Springfield, Vermont. A late example of Metcalf's work in the Impressionist mode, it is brightly colored, with dry, broken brushstrokes which often expose the bare canvas. The artist was influenced by Impressionism as a result of his friendships with artists such as Childe Hassam and his membership in the Ten American Painters, a group consisting largely of Impressionist artists.
