Although clearly influenced by Titian's altarpiece in the church of the Frari in Venice, this work demonstrates the virtuoso carver's meticulous attention to individual figures and their emotions. As in the adjacent relief, the paper-thin ivory was treated as if it were a canvas altarpiece. Both compositions bear inscriptions on the reverse stating that they served as devotional images for a young Italian nun.
