Prince Poniatowski's collection, orginally presented as a collection of antique gems, was sold in 1839. A large component of the collection was acquired by a British amateur named Tyrrell, who attempted to sell it to the British Museum. However, the collection was revealed to be largely forged before this could occur, and the collection was dispersed. Many of the Greek names inscribed on the Poniatowski gems were fictitious.
