MacMonnies executed this study of a female nude in profile when he was an art student in Europe, perhaps at the Royal Academy in Munich, where his curriculum centered on life drawing. Sketching from a nude model fostered not only an understanding of anatomy, but also the concepts of volume, perspective, and shading that would prove critical to MacMonnies’s later work in figurative sculpture and painting.
