Victory — Evelyn Beatrice Longman

Eschewing precedents, Longman interpreted her allegorical Victory as a male figure. He wears a short cuirass and greaves with acanthus patterning and holds in his left hand the traditional symbols of victory: oak leaves and a laurel wreath. This statuette is a reduction after a monumental version of Victory displayed at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1904. Longman’s statue was a focal point of the fairgrounds and launched her career.
