Longman executed “Torso of a Woman” as a companion piece to “Seated Female Figure” (27.21.4). The tilting truncated figure seated solidly on a rocklike form has a distinguished artistic lineage. By deliberately choosing to render an incomplete figure, Longman joined a corps of turn-of-the-twentieth-century artists, most notably French sculptor Auguste Rodin, who relied on the part to imply the whole.
