Mino da Fiesole (Mino di Giovanni)
third quarter 15th century · Marble · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

Cardinal d'Estetouteville (1403–1483), a rich French prelate, commissioned Mino da Fiesole to produce the marble ciborium in Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome, finished in 1461 and since dismantled, one of whose reliefs bears the cardinal's portrait. Our bust in high relief surely also occupied an architectural setting.
