On the Hudson — Thomas Doughty

This view is thought to represent a stretch of the Hudson River in the vicinity of the Catskill Mountains north of Newburgh, New York. Doughty’s subdued manner and the scene’s lack of sublimity reinforce the essentially eighteenth-century English character of his landscapes. The subdued palette, contemplative atmosphere, and undifferentiated masses of foliage create a pleasant, if conservative, mood—one that would be displaced by the emerging Romantic sensibilities of younger American artists.
