André Courrèges trained under Cristobal Balenciaga for a decade before opening his own couture salon in 1961. Although Courrèges carried on aspects of his instructor’s strictly tailored, architectural designs, he imbued his own work with a youthful and futuristic aesthetic. For his 1964 “Space Age” collection, Courrèges created A-line, mini-length dresses and coats, goggle sunglasses, and boots in a palette of bright, solid colors punctuated with silver. These white kidskin and patent leather moon boots, iconic for their shape and color, were inspired by astronautic uniforms and designed for both men and women.
