Scratching Her Heel
Alexander Stirling Calder
1921 · Bronze · The American Wing

Calder, father of the famous modern artist, sculpted many small, informal studies of nudes engaged in the commonplace actions of day-to-day life. “Scratching Her Heel” depicts its subject in a natural, though complicated, pose: bending and twisting to reach the left heel with the left hand. The cast has a fragile blue-green patina, lending it a weathered appearance.
