According to Borglum, his primary motive for executing the group of seven stampeding horses was to convey "intense controlled action” and his allusion to Greek mythology was merely an afterthought. The sculpture was the first major work produced in the New York studio that Borglum established in 1901. The Metropolitan’s bronze cast is unique; reduced versions, twenty-one inches high, were produced beginning in 1904.
