Brooks Brothers modeled its polo coat on the English version of the overcoat worn off the field by players of that sport. The cream-colored overcoat with its mother-of-pearl buttons was the first version offered by the retailer. Brooks Brothers would later add gray and camel's hair to the line. Brooks Brothers was founded in 1818 in New York City. Offering both ready-made and custom men's clothing, the retailer expanded its offerings to include women's wear in the 1940s.
