The complete four-piece ensemble, seen here, is rare for children's clothing. This piece is a good representation of high style childrenswear from the 1870s. The whimsical detail in combination of red and blue ribbon trim on the coat, defines the coat as a separate piece of outerwear from the other parts of the ensemble. It is very possible that the bodice and jacket are alternatives bodices for the skirt.
