The Peacock Revolution of the mid-1960s drastically changed menswear from the traditional and staid to exaggerated and flamboyant. Suit collars and lapels took on large proportions and shirts and vests became vividly patterned. This vest is a classic example of this British style which ruled fashion at the time. The variation of pattern also references the Op Art movement which utilized optical illusions and perceptual abstraction.
