Evening dress
Christian Dior|House of Dior
ca. 1956 · silk, synthetic · Costume Institute

A classic Christian Dior dress from the mid 1950s, this garment exemplifies the silhouette with which the designer is so closely associated. The full bouffant skirt and tightly fitted boned bodice are characteristic of his work and inspired countless imitations throughout the 1950s. In this example, the fitted bands curving down from the waist provide flattering shaping and the decorative buttons, another hallmark of Dior's, create interest in the skirt, a element also seen in other Dior garments in the Brooklyn collection from about the same time, such as 2009.300.445, 2009.300.363 and 2009.300.346.
