H & M Rayne was one of the most prestigious and high quality British shoe manufacturers of the 20th century. The firm's ability to produce chic, timely designs of the highest quality secured its preeminence from the 1920s through the 1980s. This tabbed pump is a unique adaptation of a classic day style, the loafer, for eveningwear, by using materials distinct to that genre. This was the era when trousers were just beginning to appear as eveningwear, inviting the adaptation of other associated garments and accessories to that new context.
