Evening pumps
Debusschère of Bruges|Henri Bendel
ca. 1938 · silk, leather, metal · Costume Institute

In 1939, the classic Belgian Shoes loafer was designed by Debusschère for Henri Bendel and available in a wide variety of fabrications, only through his store. Several shoes in the Brooklyn collection illustrate, however, that Henri Bendel had already established a relationship with Debusschère of Bruges to produce an exclusive line of shoes for the store by the mid 1930s. This pair of pumps shows the features of the merchandise from the early period: luxurious materials in an interesting combination and somewhat idiosyncratic design.
