This dress is a good American interpretation of the children's dresses that were being produced by Liberty and Co. in England at this time. Garments such as this were viewed as a radical change from the overly constrictive clothing of the Victorian era and mirrored the changes in less constrictive clothing for women that became an acceptable alternative in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. As a practical touch, the horizontal tucks taken in the skirt allowed for letting out as the child grew.
