Mantilla

third quarter 19th century · silk · Costume Institute

This is a very high quality example of machine-made lace of the blonde (sometimes referred to as "Spanish") type. Compared to more common examples, the work is more refined and delicate and the motifs are less static, with a sense of movement. The variety of fillings and details also add to its overall visual appeal.
