Women and children wore caps such as these throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to cover their heads from drafts, or underneath other headwear. This cap in particular is very beautifully detailed, and showcases the hand-work that was commonly done to decorate caps. The eyelet openings in particular are visually effective, the drawstring cord is very fine and the delicate flowering branch motif makes for an overall pleasing effect.
